TOWN, with LandsecU+I, are pleased to announce that our project known as the Core Site – our planned, 5,600-home new quarter of Cambridge – has received a new name, and one that reflects a central value of the project, to be shaped by many.

Through an innovative, 12-month process of engaging with local people, a new name has been selected for the project: Hartree. The selection of this name has involved the active participation of hundreds of local people. The process began through a collaboration with Cambridge Regional College, where we asked students to identify and research possible project names, exploring names that would have particular relevance to the project, and including the names of local residents. This process led to a shortlist of potential names that were subject to a month-long public vote that offered members of the local community the opportunity to select the final name. This approach reflects a core value of the Hartree project to be shaped by many: this is one of many ways that we are seeking to ensure that the proposals for this important project are meaningfully influenced by local residents and stakeholders.

The chosen name, Hartree, pays tribute to Eva Hartree, (1873-1947). Eva Hartree was the first female mayor of Cambridge and is recognised as a champion of gender equality, women’s rights and in the provision of housing for professional women through the Cambridge Women’s Housing Association.

“By honouring Eva Hartree, a trailblazing individual in the city’s history, we are not only preserving her legacy but also highlighting the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of our neighbourhoods. Engaging with the community is at the heart of the way we are designing and building Hartree so we are delighted that we have been able to name the project in collaboration with local people.”
