We are excited to share the news that on April 5th, 2023, the Brighton & Hove Planning Committee granted approval for the restoration of the historic Moulsecoomb Place Manor House, Tithe Barn, and gardens on Lewes Road.

TOWN, appointed as the project’s development managers by Cathedral Group, were leading the design process and the coordination of the two applications, focusing on preserving the grade II listed buildings while also providing 566 new student bedrooms to meet the area’s growing demand for purpose-built student accommodation.

The development will be a catalyst for economic growth in the region. With an estimated 62 new jobs and an investment of over £150 million, the project will breathe new life into the park and listed buildings, ensuring they become accessible public spaces that cater to the needs of both the local community and students attending the nearby University of Brighton’s Moulsecoomb Campus.

Sustainability is at the core of this development, a key project workstream managed by TOWN. The new student buildings will be constructed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards, ensuring high-quality accommodation for students. Furthermore, a 100-square-metre community space on the ground level will enable integration between the student population and existing communities in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean. The project includes public realm improvements within the site and adjacent public highway, enhancing accessibility to the gardens. Through thoughtful landscaping and planting, the project aims to achieve a ten percent biodiversity net gain.

“We are delighted to be granted permission to take forward this exciting development, which we believe will bring huge benefit to the local community in Moulsecoomb and the wider city of Brighton and Hove.” Richard Upton, CEO of Cathedral Group

The restoration of the Manor House and Tithe Barn represents an opportunity to transform these historical structures into vibrant spaces for the community. The plans encompass a pub, restaurant, event space, and guest bedrooms, alongside alterations to the surrounding landscaping. TOWN’s involvement in the project began in April 2022, and within just a year of engagement with the Local Planning Authority (LPA), the project successfully obtained planning consent.
With the recent approval secured at Hove Town Hall by the Brighton and Hove Planning Committee, the project is now poised to move forward.
