TOWN Director Jonny Anstead was a judge for the AJ Architecture Awards 2023, which took place on 22nd November.

The AJ Architecture Awards, which are now in their sixth year, celebrate and reward design excellence in UK architecture, across 17 categories from housing, health, and wellbeing to workplace and cultural projects.

Jonny has served as an awards judge in 2022 and 2023. This year, he was one of three judges responsible for the Project Under £500k category, marking a new-build or refurbishment project from any sector completed for between £300k £500k total construction cost over the last year. The award went to Corner Fold House, by Whittaker Parsons, an 88m² home, costing £350,000 on a narrow 3.9m-wide site between a substation and the clients’ former family home. The couple wanted to downsize as they neared retirement, freeing up their traditional Victorian terraced house next door, where they had lived for 20 years. ‘The clients have got bang for their buck,’ said the jury. ‘Externally it looks like quite a small, humble building. But it seems so much bigger when you get inside – and that’s down to the clever layout and the clever architecture.’

Other shortlisted projects included private homes across the UK, as well as the Treehouse, a standalone, timber hotel room in the Lake District by HPA, which also received a special mention from judges.
